The fitness of dispersing spotted hyaena sons is influenced by maternal social status

چکیده
Life history theory predicts that mothers should provide their offspring with a privileged upbringing if this enhances their offspring ’ s and their own fi tness. In many mammals, highranking mothers provide their offspring with a privileged upbringing. Whether dispersing sons gain fi tness benefi ts during adulthood from such privileges (a ‘ silver spoon ’ effect) has rarely been examined. In this paper, we show that in the complex, female-dominated society of spotted hyaenas, high-born sons grew at higher rates, were more likely to disperse to clans offering the best fi tness prospects, started reproducing earlier and had a higher reproductive value than did lower-born sons. This illustrates the evolutionary importance of maternal effects even in societies in which male size or fi ghting ability does not infl uence fi tness. By demonstrating for the fi rst time in a non-human mammal that maternal status infl uences immigration patterns, the study also advances our understanding of two key ecological and evolutionary processes, dispersal and habitat selection.

Individual dispersal decisions affect fitness via maternal rank effects in male rhesus macaques
Natal dispersal may have considerable social, ecological and evolutionary consequences. While species-specific dispersal strategies have received much attention, individual variation in dispersal decisions and its fitness consequences remain poorly understood. We investigated causes and consequences of natal dispersal age in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), a species with male dispersal. Using...

Differences in the social systems and behaviour of two potentially important hosts of rabies, the African wild dog and the spotted hyaena, may lead to differences in the epizootiology of the disease in the two species. Wild dogs are highly social animals in which pack members are in constant physical contact with each other, but in which inter-pack interactions are rare. Spotted hyaenas are mor...
متن کاملTransient genital abnormalities in striped hyenas (Hyaena hyaena).
The highly masculinized genitalia of female spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta is unique among mammals: Crocuta have no external vagina so urination, penile intromission and parturition take place through the clitoris, which mimics a fully erectile male penis. Among hyenids, virilization of external female genitalia has previously been observed only in Crocuta, so functional explanations of masculi...

Spotted hyaenas Crocuta crocuta were once considered mere scavengers; however, detailed research revealed that they are very efficient predators. Information on what spotted hyaenas actually prefer to prey on and what they avoid is lacking, as well as the factors that influence prey selection. Data from 14 published and one unpublished study from six countries throughout the distribution of the...
